Alzheimer's / Dementia

There are more than 5 million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and according to the American Alzheimer’s Association every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease. Estimates of costs to American society are $214 billion including Medicare and Medicaid. These costs are staggering.

Extensive research is being done utilizing light (Low level Laser- LLLT) Our research has shown such remarkable success in reversing the effects of this condition we have opened a clinic specializing in this breakthrough therapy.

Stroke / Aphasia

Brain disorders have become more and more common today, due to both the aging population and the ever-expanding sports community. However, a new therapeutic technology called photo-biomodulation (PBM) is giving hope to thousands of individuals in need. Traumatic brain injury (TBI), dementia, post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and attention deficit (ADD) disorders are in many cases quickly and safely improved by PBM. PBM employs red or near-infrared (NIR) light (600 - 1100 nm) to stimulate healing, protect tissue from dying, increase mitochondrial function, improve blood flow, and tissue oxygenation. We are proud to have our sixth paper published for our work with Stroke and Aphasia.

Included here are the two most recent publications. The first was published in 2020 by the Harvard University team who have focusing on this technology over 15 years. The second is our paper published this month detailing how our clinic can reverse the symptoms of Aphasia in just a few days.

PTSD

Objective
Dr. William Stephan and therapist, Lou Banas, have been treating headaches and concussions with the modality now referred to as Photo-Medicine (previously LLLT, Low Level Laser) for over five years. We have observed changes in personality and cognition in a couple of patients and we therefore decided to treat a few select patients who were diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s in an effort to improve their quality of life.

Method
Patients were illuminated in the pre-frontal cortex in four areas and Circle of Willis (one area) for duration of two and one-half minutes every 48 hours for 5-6 treatments. We utilized the Theralase multi-probe (905 nm. / 660 nm. ) at 60 miliwatts.

Conclusion
Virtually all 50 patients diagnosed with PTSD reported new emotionally stability and the questionnaire responses indicated that they no longer suffered frm PTSD after 5 treatments; however some needed maintenance treatments which were minimal. Patients with vascular dementia also responded well showing either cognition improvement or a more agreeable change in personality. However, patients who appeared to be in robust health but having no short term memory did not respond. This was especially true when confronted with a stressful situation.

Arthritis

No clinically tested modality is proven to be more effective for arthritis. While arthritis is a chronic condition without a cure, Theralase therapeutic laser treatments can provide substantial relief from symptoms by reducing inflammation of the joints, eliminating pain, increasing range of motion of the joints and improving immune cell production and efficiency.

Theralase lasers reduce inflammation in arthritis-affected joints by stimulating the lymphatic system, which drains interstitial fluid from tissues located in the injured area. Laser treatments also regenerate immune cells (lymphocytes). The lymphatic system carries these lymphocytes to the injured area where they excrete bioenergy used to destroy infection. When Theralase empowers the lymphocytes, each cell releases more bioenergy making it a better combatant.

A Theralase super pulsed laser has the unique ability to penetrate tissue up to 4" below the dermis - 5 times further than our closest competitor - treating deep chronic arthritis conditions commonly found in the knees and shoulders.

Migraines

Migraines or headaches which are differentiated by some professionals are all the same to the person who has one; it is pain full and oftentimes debilitating. 85% of headaches are the result of ischemia that is the medical term for lack of blood flow. Our laser gently but quickly increases blood flow within a matter of minutes! The reason for this is the utilization of the 905 nanometer wavelength which few other manufacturers utilize. A recent study showed that it out performs all other wavelengths by over 700%.

My patients are amazed at the immediate relief they often experience after just one treatment. Furthermore future headaches are often less frequent and pain is diminished significantly to the point their equality of life is significantly improved. Except in the case of severe trauma or stroke only 2 treatments are all that is needed.

Wound Healing

Laser treatments accelerate each of the three phases associated with the natural healing of wounds: inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. The result is a reduction in pain, inflammation reduction, increased stimulation of connective tissue (granulation tissue) and increased capillary production (angiogenesis) leading to improved blood flow during proliferation.

Inflammation
Despite the pain associated with this stage, the inflammatory phase is necessary for tissue repair. First, in the area of the wound, there appear platelets and white blood cells to coagulate the blood and stop blood loss.. Next, an increased number of macrophages clean the area and remove dead tissue by engulfing and destroying foreign matter and damaged cells. Macrophages also release products (known as "factors") that stimulate proliferation - the second step of wound healing.

Proliferation
This is the formation of "granulation tissue". There is an activation of fibroblasts and angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the production of new capillaries (small blood vessels). Fibroblasts are connective tissue cells that form the basis of new tissue. A special kind of fibroblast is the myofibroblast. This cell can contract itself like a smooth muscle cell and in this manner diminish the surface size of the wound. This process is known as collagen synthesis.

Remodeling
This is the final step of wound contraction, where the tissue starts to contract and return to its normal appearance.

What happens when a laser is placed on an open wound?
Laser treatment accelerates the different healing phases, preserving only the necessary components of the inflammatory phase, resulting in a shorter inflammatory reaction causing less pain. Laser stimulates the fibroblasts during the proliferation phase, speeds up angiogenesis and causes temporary vasodilation (blood vessels increase in diameter).

Greater blood flow equals more efficient delivery of oxygen and fuel molecules to the area and a faster removal of waste products; thus allowing a greater production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - the basic energy source of a cell. In angiogenesis, the final result is a greater production of blood vessels through the growth of new tissue. Laser also accelerates the absorption of a haematoma through the stimulation of prostacyclin.

Sinusitis

Sinus problems are a serious problem for many of us here in Western New York. The surgical procedure is complicated and painful and even worse not sometimes fails or may have to be repeated in the future.

Our procedure is simple and painless.

A small probe is placed externally on the six sinus cavities and usually only four procedures are needed. The exception to a total, quick healing is the case when a person has a structural problem for example a deviated septum or polyps. We would suggest that problem is remedied and then consult us for the procedure. Here is testimonial from a Mr. Wrona who suffered every fall for years and after the suggested four treatments he has had no re-occurrence for 4 years!

Dystonia

Objective
Lou Banas, Photo-medicine Therapist, has been doing pioneering work with brain injury and Neurodegenerative disease for 5 years. He was introduced to Terry Jo Brooks - Devlin Psychiatric Nurse Practioner, whose 17-year-old daughter developed Dystonia, approximately six months after experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It was decided that “Light” therapy would be administered as a last resort as all other interventions including medication, Botox injections, and physical therapy treatments were of minimal help for the pain and limited movement she suffers.

Method
Patient was illuminated in the prefrontal cortex in four areas and Circle of Willis (one area) for duration of two and one-half minutes every 48 hours for 5-6 treatments. We utilized the Theralase multi-probe (905 nm. /660 nm.)at 60 miliwatts.

Conclusion
Patient showed significant improvement starting with second treatment. Precluding symptoms included: neuropathic pain, muscle spasticity, brain “fog”, and anxiety. Post treatment improvements were: no pain, increased movement and almost no spasticity, no brain fog, minimal anxiety. The subject ceased taking enzodiazepines, started driving, and doing more physical and mental activities. The need to avoid simulating events like shopping at the mall or rock concert was no longer an issue. Clinical studies should be initiated. This modality could play a key role in reducing the significant health care costs projected for treating neurodegenerative disease.

Erectile Dysfunction

So you are wondering why your search for E.D. problems directed you here. That’s because the most important healing pathway of our system is the ability to increase blood flow quickly and in some cases permanently.

I discussed the almost instant increase in blood flow with migraines in the migraine section of this website, it hold’s true here as well.

This quick, safe and painless treatment will last for several months and there are absolutely no side effects which is a considerable problem with current medications. The clinical study done in Israel utilized a specially designed system which took 19 minutes twice a week for 6 treatments over a three week period. Our system is an 8-minute treatment and most patients need only one treatment which will last several months. HOWEVER, THIS TREATMENT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. Our system will work extraordinary well for men who just need that boost that their medication gives them, this system will not be effective for someone who’s problem is a result of medications (in most instances) or the elderly who have not been able to have relations for more the one year.

Sports Injuries

Pain is believed to originate from an ionic differentiation of potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+) ions across a cellular membrane. Theralase 905 nm super-pulsed laser technology increases cellular membrane permeability and causes a reabsorption of sodium and expulsion of potassium molecules, removing the gradient and thus the pain signal at source.

Anti-Inflammation

LLLT has an anti-oedemic effect, as it causes vasodilation, but also because it activates the lymphatic drainage system to drain interstitial fluid (drains swollen areas).

Anti-Pain (Analgesic)

As a result of reduced inflammation, there is less oedema and therefore less pain. LLLT stimulates vasodilation and lymphatic drainage, which increases the reabsorption of pain-causing products. LLLT delivers 905 nm super-pulsed infrared wavelength light, which is absorbed by the bi-lipid layer comprising the cellular membrane and thus regulates the nerve cell's sodium-potassium pump. This pump maintains the potential across the membrane of a nerve cell, which leads to pain transmission signals. By regulating the pump, transmission of pain signals from the area can be eliminated.

Clinical Studies Utilizing 904nm Lasers

Currently there are over 100 Positive Double Blind Studies dating as far back as 1984. One source for hundreds of abstracts online is www.laser.nu.

Since 1984 the technology has become far more advanced and the technology (laser) that is promoted by Theralase is still unique Class 3b laser due to the wavelengths utilized and the 50 watts of power behind it.

Consequently, the most successful clinical in regards to efficacy are pulsed lasers utilizing 904 nm laser diodes. (Newest modification of this wavelength is 905 technology). Here are the most informative double blind studies.
